Reflecting on UJ@20 Journey: The Journey of Growth as an International Student at UJ
The Journey of Becoming: A Reflection on UJ@20
Arriving in Johannesburg from Zimbabwe was not just crossing borders, I was stepping into the world that felt both intimidating and exciting. At 20, I had experienced the rich culture and warmth of my home land but I knew studying at the University of Johannesburg would require me to expand my outlook in areas I had not yet imagined. Now as a second year Strategic Communication student, I can confidently say that the journey so far has been transformative in a number of ways. Home - 20 Years of UJ
A new beginning at UJ
When I first landed at UJ everything felt very awkward. The diversity on campus was overwhelming as I often found myself with people of various backgrounds together in one place. Be it in classroom, during group discussions or at student centre, I was constantly learning from others' views, cultures and experiences. Being an international student meant navigating new systems, cultures and ways of thinking. During the first days I failed to adjust as the workload was heavier than expected and they were days where I felt home sick but I discovered that UJ has a unique way of making one feel at home as I witnessed students from all backgrounds bond forming friendships that surpassed national and cultural differences. I found peace in knowing that every challenge was an opportunity for growth. International Students - University of Johannesburg
Growth and Challenges: Discovering my potentials
My academic journey at UJ has been a story of constant self-discovery. Coming from Zimbabwe where education is more structured and traditional, I found UJ's approach to teaching as more interactive and student-centred being both exciting and intimidating. I remember this day after class I felt nervous as I was walking around campus. Through my course in Public Relations and Strategic Communication I had the chance to challenge myself and learn new skills that will shape my career. Adjusting to the fast-paced city slowly turned into opportunities to develop resilience and being independent. Culture shock was also another change I faced as most of the students speak different languages and have different cultural beliefs. However, the language diversity on campus has expanded my understanding of how to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences being a crucial skill for a career in my course. One of the most lessons I have learnt is that growth does not happen in comfort zones sometimes it came from the days l struggled to adjust that shaped my character in various ways. uj humanities faculty stategiccommunication - Search
UJ@20 : The Spirit of Innovation and Change
As UJ celebrates two decades of excellence, innovation and change, I cannot help but feel proud to be part of this vibrant institution. UJ is a beacon of change, progress and innovation not just in South Africa but across the African continent. Its commitment to shaping the future is clear in ways it fosters creativity and social responsibility among students. For someone like me coming from Zimbabwe, the university gave me the opportunities to think beyond boarders, challenge ideas and have an impact in my field of study.
What UJ means to me
To me UJ is not just a university it is a community that has nurtured me into the person I am today. the lecturers do not just teach they mentor and guide as well. They have helped me navigate not just academically but also through personal growth. One thing I love the most about UJ is how it embraces diversity as I felt welcomed, supported and encouraged to share my unique perspective. The sense of community here is powerful and it has been through connecting with people internationally. The challenge of being homesick have been matched by joys of making new friends and creating memories that will last a lifetime. From joining the International Student Association to attending cultural events I learnt to embrace the beauty of being part of something bigger than myself.
Hopes of the Future UJ
As I reflect on my time at UJ so far and its journey towards 20 years, I am excited about the future. UJ has proved that it's a hub of innovation, creativity and inclusivity, I hope to see it continue to grow in the next two decades. I believe that the university will remain a force in shaping the future of its students but also the future of the continent. I believe that UJ will continue empowering students and committing to its social development.
Conclusion: A Journey Worth Celebrating
UJ's 20th anniversary is not just a celebration of its achievements but a reminder of its impact on student lives. For me, UJ is more than just an institution it's a place for growth, learning and endless opportunities. As I look ahead to my final year, I am filled with anticipation for what is coming as shaped me into a more resilient, confidence and cultural aware individual and I am excited to see where the journey takes me next
